Vehicle exhaust is the dominant source of air pollution in Jakarta. As an effort to reduce emissions from the transportation sector, Jakarta monitors the emissions of passenger transport vehicles and freight cars through the KIR Test mechanism. 

Because the largest number of vehicles in Jakarta is motorcycles and cars, the vehicle emission test is applied and mandatory for private cars and motorcycles operating in Jakarta and can be done in a few easy steps:
Bring your vehicle to an emission test site (emission test workshop or kiosk) and the emission test technicians will test and store the data to the emission test information system. 

Emission tests are carried out at least one time in one year for individual passenger cars and motorcycles that are more than 3 years old. Every owner of cars and motorcycles who does not carry out emission tests and/ or does not meet the requirements for passing the exhaust emission test will be subject to parking payment and fines.
